As a study in parental grief, I give it 4 stars. Sadly, that is ruined by an inept attempt at horror, that gets 1 star. Venice is kinda cool.
The real horror of this movie is that some arthouse critic who everyone else thinks is important said this was a good movie and everybody afterwards was afraid to disagree. As a B movie I rate this a D. It is a colorful (very) Plan 9 From Outer Space. Watch it for the Arthouse experience. There are worse ways to spend 1 hour 39 minutes. Or, you could mow the lawn and accomplish something. Oh, and the Goblin soundtrack is really annoying. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It. Is. Annoying.
What is there to say that hasn't already been said? One of my favorite movies. Repeatedly watchable. A great story well told by the entire production from writers to actors to directors to editors, etc. Rick is the man who follows his own rules. Watch for Sam's expression when he wordlessly points out Ilsa to Rick. Watch the faces of the crowd when the French anthem is sung. Listen for Renault's response when Rick has a gun

It is worth just watching the opening scene with Denny Dent spray painting. Of course I have heard Jimi Hendrix on the local classic radio station. Watching him play is a whole other experience. Genius talent. Knowing he died young, it is not hard to imagine he paid a high price to his muse.
