Not exactly a film buff, but definitely one by association. Sometimes the critics are wrong, dude.

Regardless of whether you are an enjoyer of musicals, it is impossible not to be charmed by Wicked. Between the hand-built sets, the live singing, and the incredible stunts, there is an unusual earnestness and authenticity that shows through in every scene. If you have experienced humanity, there is something in this film that will resonate with you.

Though it shamelessly employs many of the same tropes as its contemporaries Ju-on and Ringu (the latter of which was also directed by Hideo Nakata), Dark Water still manages to bring something new and distinctly meaningful to the table. Beyond the intermittent scares and familiar early-aughts Japanese horror imagery - think murky water, elusive child ghosts, and creepy crayon pictures - lies a touching story that explores themes of eking out a childhood in the midst of adult dysfunction. I was riveted the entire 100-minute runtime by a well-paced story and impressive acting from both leads.

A poorly-paced, convoluted plot that Travola’s charm and commitment can’t manage to save. Allen makes a noble effort as well, but it’s troubling that the female lead is written as a character with so little agency or common sense.

It’s hard to tell sometimes if this is a film that takes itself entirely too seriously, or not seriously at all. Regardless, it will be nothing like anything you have ever seen anywhere before, and there is not a moment of predictability or triteness to be found in its surprising 139-minute runtime.
