This movie dips a toe into so many vague social ills and just says nothing interesting about any of them. The glitz and spectacle are soulless because the narrative views the violations and horrors Bella experiences as morally weightless. Once again, girlbossery is not the same as liberation??

In an effort to create a more grounded Batman, this film builds a Gotham plagued by systemic corruption at every level of governance and enforcement, only for the film’s resolution to claim that these things can be overcome not through dismantling these broken institutions but by putting faith in individuals codified as symbols, the exact thing that led to this corruption in the first place.
