Carey’s masterpiece! The commitment he made just to get into prosthetics and makeup shows. The set design seems to be very close to the renderings of Dr. Suess himself. Call me old fashioned, but I love movies where so much of the sets are built and not CGI. It’s a dying breed of craftwork. Just the right amount of backstory and little additions throughout, make this a classic forever in my eyes. Plus, there’s the added emotional attachment for the fact that my family has watched this movie from the beginning during each Christmas!

This was my first horror movie that gave me genuine terror as I was around 11-12 at the time. Keeping the closet doors closed was a big thing for a while. I watched it at a buddy’s house in a bootleg tape his dad somehow got.

I too saw this film, again, after at least 15 years. Saw it with a brilliant young new filmmaker. Was blown away the first time I saw it. There was such a closeup intensity within each scene of expertly crafted dialogue. The way the 2 stars, Jodie and Anthony, got inside each other’s heads jumped from offputting cringeworthiness, to brash and blush worthy, to almost endearing in a sick and demented way as they both build their sick relationship while…
