That’s right. Third Soderbergh of the day. I couldn’t resist watching his two Oscar-winning films from 2000 back-to-back. Honestly, it’s insane to think how this guy can just crank out films of such high quality at the rate he does, and Traffic is no exception. One of his very best no doubt and one of the better films to explore drug trafficking from all the disgusting ins and outs. A really thoughtful, well realized script that gives the entire ensemble so much to play with. Douglas, Cheadle, and especially del Toro are phenomenal here. I dug the hell out of this. Remarkable final shot.

A total crowd pleaser through and through. Incredibly well constructed with a powerhouse performance from Julia Roberts who has never been better. It’s a tad clichéd and predictable but the craftsmanship on display is undeniable. I don’t see how anyone could watch this and not get swept up in the drama.

This is fine. Biggest issue is that the film never warrants it’s existence. It’s based off of the Pulitzer Prize winning play of the same name and I cannot help but wish I had seen that instead. This just doesn’t work as a film. The shot composition is bland and stale; just shot-reverse-shot with nothing visually stimulating ever happening. Really not a fan of the fourth wall breaks and extensive use of monologues either. Certain things simply do not translate…

I can say with sheer confidence that this was the most unsettling theatre experience of my life. I was literally drenched in sweat and trembling in fear, not wanting to look at the screen. The eternal, deafening darkness that unmercifully encompassed my senses was unlike no other. I wanted so desperately to look away but I couldn’t. I’ve never seen anything like Skinamarink and I doubt I ever will. For the first time in my adult life, I can say that…
