I was going to give it one star until I realized I can give it half.
While I understand the purpose of the film and what it depicts, it fails in absolutely everything else.
I always get very annoyed when the film has an arrogant cinematography that tries to be innovative and edgy and ends up being more annoying than anything, leave alone the ASMR acoustic that comes with it.
The plot and script are absolutely ridicolous, which is what…
A beautiful journey in which Vinterberg portrays the perks of disinhibition by also depicting the price to pay for forgetting the cowardice or shyness that prevents us from being the best version of ourselves.
With an adequate pace, the movie does not rush and takes its time in order to show the different stages the characters go through, alongside the intra- and interpersonal consequences they have to face.
Moreover, Mads Mikkelsen certainly achieves an amazing performance, and his character arch is masterfully built, ending with a dancing sequence that will most likely become iconic.
A beautiful story that makes you wonder which is the correct way of doing anything.
The film not only portrays the flaws of the kind of life occidental society imposes, but it accurately reflects the mistake of avoiding simplicity when it comes to raising and educating children, too.
The dilemma depiction of Mortensen's character regarding the best way of acting for the correct development of his children is brilliantly represented, with the character vindicating what he believes in but being coherent enough to step back when needed.
What I personally take from this film? I am never going to use the word "interesting" again.
