People talk about this film the way they talk to/about young women, simultaneously patronizing and criticizing- Brownings nudity is exploitative, but not sexy enough; the film is too boring, but also too disturbing; Browning is a childlike victim, but also it’s her fault for choosing “bad projects”; the concept is stupid, the concept is unclear. This is my favorite movie, i watch it once a year and it both soothes and unnerves me. It’s like the center of my horror identity and it constantly blows my mind that I’m in the minority of people who like it. It’s the purest form of a ghost story and an excellent use of subtlety to unnerve an audience. This is my Joker.
