I’d argue the film really works because it’s almost constructed as an alternate horror film, built around emptiness and expectation. We end up following the chaser this time, but there’s that same amount of cruelty (passive though) and unwelcome surprises that maintain the momentum and keeps the film rolling without it feeling tacky or manipulative.
