I feel like there was a lot of potential here but it ended up falling flat and saying nothing new or of interest. I understand that by staying apolitical it was attempting to highlight the “senselessness” of war and violence, but somehow that made it feel incredibly shallow. I think if we got to know the photojournalists more beyond a few personality traits it would’ve added some depth, but otherwise yeah,, not for me.

I’ll preface this by saying that this movie is definitely not for everyone (it’s definitely going to lose money), but it’s phenomenal if you’re part of the niche audience it’s intended for.
Ari Aster did an amazing job at portraying the long-term effects of complex trauma resulting from childhood emotional abuse (specifically abuse from an emotionally volatile, insecure, and codependent caregiver).
