Brilliant performances. A very difference experience compared to the novel.
The best thing about the book is the slow build up of relationships and characterisation, so that by the end, you know all of the characters as if they’re real people in your life. That’s why it’s so devastating and affecting.
In the play, you’ve barely learnt their names before the horror starts. The balance of trauma and love is skewed so far in the direction of trauma that the story loses its power. Instead of being poignant, it’s just bleak.
