  I don’t know what’s more terrifying about this movie: the utterly graphic and unsettling violence or the devastatingly realistic depiction of a toxic relationship.

  Starring one of the great talents of her generation, Florence Pugh, Midsommar inverts basically all horror standards to create a truly original film that is equal parts mind fuck as it is thought provoking.

  Do we even need to ask whether a Steven Spielberg movie is “good” or not any more? 

  As far as objective standards of the craft of cinema are concerned, all boxes are checked here:

  Resplendent cinematography? Check. Immaculate, transportive production design? Check. Genuinely award caliber performances from A list Hollywood royalty?  Check. An exactly correct to the material, yet still beautiful on its own score from John Williams? Check. Emotions all over the place? Big Check.

  Everything Everywhere All at Once 2022

  Believe the hype on this one. An inventive, fun, surprisingly emotional trip through the multiverse of an ordinary life, it’s hard to find a movie in 2022 that gets more things right. 

  Laudable for its action sequences, terrific editing, ace in the hole comedy, and especially for the acting performances of all 3 of its leads, the Daniels’ film deserves all of the praise it gets.

  The one qualm I have is it is just oh so slightly too long, but in the context of how truly great this movie is that’s an easily forgivable trespass.

Following
