The Substance 2024
140 minutes of surface-level feminism. The Substance provides a shallow exploration of its themes.Fargeat's reliance on body horror nearly erases the complexity of the issues it tries to tackle. It feels more invested in shock value than in delivering insightful commentary. By spelling out its messages so plainly (with exaggerated characters and surface-level satire) it leaves no room for emotional depth or meaningful character development. Although it's a story with intriguing themes the execution just didn't work at all, at least for me.
