Okay so, I first watched this film the year it came out and was too scared to even process the plot but now that I've rewatched it many more times, I really like it. But everyone else doesn't?
Whyyyyy???
I recommend this movie to almost everyone I meet and 9/10 people think I'm crazy for enjoying it?!?! I'm not going to sit here and act like this movie was revolutionary but it was still pretty cool. The action sequences were fun and the characters, good or bad, were just unsettling enough to keep me intrigued,
And the costumeeeee, I LOVED the costume. EMMA'S SHOES!!! Absolutely stunning.
I think the areas of set and the elements of costume that were more detailed were not only highlighted well, but were really pretty and I love when pretty things are emphasised in films. The fact that most of this movie was pretty?? Even better.
This isn't a scary movie now that I look back on it, actually I think it is quite funny. The way that the Peculiar Children beat the Hollows seemed realistic for the age of the characters who were fighting. Usually I think that this would be something I dislike but... it was enjoyable to watch. Having the Hollows be invisible the whole time not only adds to Jakes importance and gives him a purpose, but also makes the Hollows "take down" seem more triumphant, because now when the Hollows are being attacked, they are seen and exposed which shifts the power towards the Children. I don't think this was intentional but who knows? Either way I like it.
I also think the movie was very visually pleasing, production did really well executing this. The Peculiars House - Stunning. The Sunken Ship - Eerie but Impressive. The differences between the real world and the Peculiar world were subtle but clear, the differences in colour grading were a good aid to create this distinction, but also the changes in set. The "real world" remained simple whilst also echoing the effect the Peculiars had on it, but the Peculiar world seems extraordinary in comparison, more vibrant, and set-wise... far more detailed. The visual elements of this film seem very well thought out and I really, really liked it.
As the film progresses and the danger looms, the colours become less saturated and more cool toned, this makes the danger more effective and prominent which is a cool detail. This also emphasises the loop timeline merging into the mundane world.
I could waffle for days about pretty much any frame of this film but unfortunately nobody will ever have enough time to listen so...
I enjoyed it. And to those who don't... I refuse to listen to you xoxo
