An unmistakable masterpiece and a film of two distinct but intertwining halves. The first recounts the melodrama in the immediate aftermath of the kidnapping and the second is a taught police thriller. Each one contrasts against the other but they both manage to cohere and deliver on each and every setup along the way.

This has the best body horror I think I've ever seen. The practical effects are so outlandishly grotesque that it pushes past the cartoonish, plastic-like gooeyness into something truly disturbing. The creature design feels erratic and violent in its shape and how each new iteration moves, bursts and convulses.
