    Keanu Reeves voice: Woooaahhh

Starts out as cheesy action-movie schlock and turns it to eleven keeping the pedal to the metal for maximum cheese. I ADORE this film. It knows exactly how to boost the premise and add new ifs and buts to every action sequence so that we always feel hot on the trails of spectacular and dangerous catastrophe. Bullock and Reeves have this instant chemistry and are able to deliver some truly eye-rollingly action-blockbuster dialogue with slick ease.…

Success isn't worth losing your humanity.

An unmistakable masterpiece and a film of two distinct but intertwining halves. The first recounts the melodrama in the immediate aftermath of the kidnapping and the second is a taught police thriller. Each one contrasts against the other but they both manage to cohere and deliver on each and every setup along the way.

First half: The impecable staging speaks volumes about the character's intentions, interpersonal motivations as well as their doubts and fears…

This has been on my watchlist for a while. The action sequences flow very well and build in intensity with the emotional stakes. I loved the unapologetically macho bravado of Reeves and Swayze. Its their strong dynamic on screen which really makes this film

Every moment is filled with so much emotional honesty. All of the performances are phenomenal, at times small and subtle and at others loud and dramatic but always authentic. Cimino tackles the emotional fractures and trauma of war with so much compassion and patience. Everyone is given the space and time to be fleshed out and character moments that feel minor in the first act but build on one another to create a real sense of the emotional bonds that…

Alex is a fascinating individual and this doc recognises that. It pulls apart and dissects his inner psychology just enough to get a foothold on what drives him without letting the surface-level allure of such a reckless stunt like this detract from other essential, contributing factors. At times he feels at arms length as the documentary attempts to capture the ethical and personal struggles of those who support him and at other times we feel more intimate and as though…

This has the best body horror I think I've ever seen. The practical effects are so outlandishly grotesque that it pushes past the cartoonish, plastic-like gooeyness into something truly disturbing. The creature design feels erratic and violent in its shape and how each new iteration moves, bursts and convulses.

More than that, I think this has a really great high-concept plot that, in someone else's hands, could have felt predictable but Carpenter knows how to drip-feed us information and how…
