Some low points, but mostly awesome. I could do without the robot / castle scene, but my 8-year-old loved it.
It meant a lot to the 10 year old me. Also, I didn't know what sexism was or product placement (Coors) or meandering plots with no characters. On the other hand, it was awesome to see it again.
Also, Burt Reynolds was my Paul Newman, when I was young and impressionable.
No way should this be in contention for Best Picture. Every war movie cliche in the book is thrown at us. Try not to chuckle during the scene at the barracks where the soldiers are introduced to us. The pacifist as a war hero is a great idea, but I never got the sense of where his pacifism came from. He was a normal small-town kid one minute, and a strong-conviction won't-hold-a-weapon idealist the next. The war scenes were vintage…
A perfect movie. My eight-year-old daughter and I watched together, both mesmerized, but for completely different reasons. No dialogue, but no misunderstanding. I cried. She didn't. Fantastic.
