Ruslan and Ludmila 1972
One of a kind! Beautiful theatrical sets, tricks (my favourite was Ruslan chopping doll heads in the end while riding a horse). I can’t ignore that the whole story felt like a male-gaze version of a perfect fairytale: brave men rescuing the princess of Russia from an old imp, men constantly wanting to rape women in warfields, the bad bad witch who in her youth declined a Finnish mans (later turned wizard) proposals apparently because wanting to invest her time…
