Pets are family, not food. Period.
The story is small and that is perfectly fine. There is no need to stretch it beyond its natural scope just to explore ideas outside its realm. A quiet road trip with your one and only bab(o)y is enough to make us care about Baby.
Though, I wish Thelma had joined them. A heartfelt goodbye from both parents to their only child would have been an emotional gut punch, probably leaving most viewers bawling their eyes out.
