Matthias & Maxime 2019
So overladen with unnecessary and spoonfeedy visual metaphor, and often banal dialogue to manufacture the actually relevant moment of heterosexual crisis. While the moments of crisis are somewhat interesting and the kiss scene at the end is great it’s so obvious that the filmmaker is interested in the gay bits and the rest of it falls flat. But even some of those gay bits are kind of overdone and trope-y now that I was disappointed when I expected more from the director’s prestige name.

The Brutalist 2024
What incredible music and imagery!
It’s a movie about immigrants and the American Dream, but what I found uncomfortable was how it fluctuates between making its politics sometimes explicit and at other times ambiguous. And that’s okay sometimes but I felt it was explicit where it was easy: “they don’t want foreigners”, ambiguous where it was difficult: “Israel is where we find home/but how will you live there?”
Really surprised that I didn’t spend a moment thinking that it went…

I'm Still Here 2024
Absolutely devastating. It’s so easy to make this a hamfisted melodrama, but the brilliantly restrained direction and acting of Fernanda Torres makes it hit so much harder.
The scene with the document is fascinating to watch as a socio legal researcher, to see the affective life of the legal material so brilliantly portrayed.
