One of Wes Anderson’s darkest films. The melancholy is a lot more apparent here than in his other films, but it absolutely works. In terms of style, it was really fun to see the balance between a looseness of his earlier work and the precision that he doubles down on later in his career. Banger soundtrack as well.

    Godspeed Gene Hackman.

Fatigue made this a little hard to enjoy at the beginning, but I started to settle into the oddly unique animation and otherworldly vibes it brought to the table as it progressed.

Movies need imagination like this again.

So much to take in here from the ambitious filmmaking to its commentary on the American dream, but one thing’s for sure is that Adrien Brody is an absolute revelation in this.

The only way to be happy is to love. Unless you love, your life will flash by.”

Didn't expect to be an emotional wreck on an afternoon laptop rewatch. I completely surrendered to the imagery this time and it made for such a uniquely overwhelming experience. No other film depicts family, childhood, loss, and wonder as beautifully as this one (although Yi Yi is a worthy contender). Deeply moving in every way possible.
