I don't really know what to tell you about this film. Part of me wants the screenwriter to do a voice-over to explain everything . . . and then part of me doesn't want that because I'm afraid of what they'd say. This is a moody sci-fi film. Maybe I didn't 'get' parts, but it's a dark view of humanity. It jumps in time, which added to my confusion. Nonetheless, I really liked the movie. The confusion and the wondering ("Did that really just happen?") add to the allure.
This was pretty good. It was scary and thrilling. Don't want to spoil anything, but it's intentionally quiet . . . don't spend the whole movie turning up the volume.
I don't know why this movie got such mediocre reception. It's an exploration of one of the little noticed efforts of the US in the aftermath of WWII. And it's got some amazing acting. I was especially blown away by Toby MacGuire, who is like nothing I've ever seen him in before. I love the retro look and feel of the film and the homages to classics like Casablanca and the Third Man.
Let me start by saying that, if you've got a prude bone in your body, skip this film. It's very, ahem, adult. That being said, it's a masterpiece of story-telling. The timeline shifts and you have to rethink everything that you saw before. You're left consistently questioning every character's motivations and guessing what will happen in the end.
