  Sean Baker's ability to display empathy surrounding subjects mainstream audiences may find challenging, taboo, transgressive, or risqué is effortlessly at work here.

  I've enjoyed being let into the everyday turbulence of his characters: the grinding struggles of Ming in NYC, the tumultuous L.A. odyssey of Sin-Dee and Alexandra, the shattering of the Moonee's youth and innocence, the much-deserved comeuppance of Mikey "Saber" Davies, and the whirlwind fairytale-gone-awry of Anora.

  But Jane and Sadie? They are my favorite characters and relationship…
