  The most frustrating thing is that the movie’s not all bad. The transitions are playful and visceral, it continues his preoccupation with historicizing, and the lost journey structure gives the film good flexibility. But where did this saccharine preciousness come from? It’s a tone I don’t expect at all from McQueen, and it really undercuts the film’s benefits.

  My god, the technical thoughtfulness involved in these images, especially the transitions, is just stunning. What’s most incredible is how it feels like both an exemplary Lynch film and an outlier at the same time. The imagery, mood, and nightmare logic are all textbook Lynch. You feel like you’re down the street from the black lodge or club silencio, and not just for one scene. But that’s also what makes it feel like an outlier—so much of Lynch’s typical narrative…
