While not knowing what I was getting myself into when first coming into the film, I found this surrealist masterpiece to be a brilliant commentary on abusive paternalistic relationships.
While Colman Domingo’s acting was great this film overall is yet another generic biopic that strips away Rustin’s radical politics for the comfortability of a white liberal audience. A history teacher of mine once said “if you watched this film you’d think Rustin is the greatest black gay party planner in history,” and I’m starting to see where he’s coming from.
