I think maybe the theatrical cut would have been the better viewing experience? I really did not care for the first hour of the movie, which I have since gathered was edited down quite a bit when first released. For me, it only served to sour me against the protagonists. There was no compelling reason shown for them to care about each other, and more damaging, no reason for me to like or care for them either. And maybe this…

As someone who found themselves moving from state to state as a young child, this film captures the fear that new and unknown places bring as you are still just trying to learn how to be a human in the world.
Chihiro's confronts her fears by being kind, polite, and confident. She befriends enemies, saves friends, and never holds a grudge. She passes an unfair test at the end to save herself and her family, and does so with grace.
All that, and it's stunningly animated and boundlessly creative.
