  I wanted to give this at least 3 stars for Hunter’s phenomenal scream queen performance but the weird pacing, exposition dumping, poor character development, and the plot holes wouldn’t let me do it. 

  This would have been an incredible mini series but makes for an okay viewing experience as a movie. I was entertained the whole time, but left kinda feeling… both over and underwhelmed?

  I wanted to enjoy this film, for a lot of obvious reasons. However, this did not bring much of anything to your typical slave narrative. Quite frankly, I felt this film leaned so much on the graphic violence and degradation of its characters to create this piece of trauma porn that we lose a lot of this man’s life. Or the complete horrific reality that was enslaved Black folks. 

  One of the most “ehhh” pieces of film I’ve ever watched
