“All plots tend to move deathward”
It’s a mess. Albeit a fascinating one. The first 20 minutes are unbearably pompous and naval-gazing then the film moves through phases of being drolly amusing, brilliant - in particular the overlapping lectures comparing Hitler and Elvis, intercut with natural disaster but at times it can be painfully pretentious.
The stilted dialogue and performances do not have the same alienating effect as they would in a Yorgos Lanthimos film, instead they’re used to examine…
