Finally watched the director’s cut and I must say I think I liked it even more than the theatrical release of the film. Midsommar was the first “proper” review I wrote on this site and although I don’t think it is a very well written review, I’m not going to rehash it but I will talk about a few things I didn’t touch on properly and the improvements made in this version.

“Her” is a film that I hold very dear to my heart. For a movie that I have heard so reductively be described as “a man falls in love with Siri”, it really is something special. I talk about it so much that my family and friends make fun of me for it. It was the first film to ever bring me to tears as an adult and my favourite "romance" movie ever made. Unfortunately despite how much I loved the tone, cinematography and the acting performances, I just found it quite boring in all honesty. I usually enjoy a story that takes its time and but this meanders too much and accomplishes too little across the 2 hour run-time, although it is book-ended with a pretty interesting 20 mins or so at either side. The black and white colour grading along with the snowy small town setting reminded me hugely of the parts of Better Call Saul that are set after the events of Breaking Bad, it's just a shame that's about all they have in common.

Spellbinding performances all round. I found it retains the same awkward feel of many stage-to-screen adaptations but with the breakneck pacing of the first half, you almost manage to ignore it. Very glad I managed to catch this at the festival.
I also was lucky enough to attend a Q&A with Jessica Lange a few days before seeing this and it was just amazing getting to hear her talk about her career from beginning to now.
