Eileen the book has a thick layer of sour grime over every page, and I was shocked at how much less disgusting this movie was. So much easier to digest than I expected. Casting McKenzie as Eileen created an easier path to forgiveness/understanding for the character than I think the viewer needs- the actress is so youthful and beautiful, and without her narration I think she has a sweetness that simplifies the story.
I read the book with a high fever a few years ago and watched the movie on painkillers so I’m not confident in any of my opinions here.

Went to this with my grandma and found myself watching her instead of the screen for much of it, which is fitting considering how much of the film is about how music is heard and observed and appreciated and regarded.
