Caligari was one trippy watch. The only thing that could hope to equal the convolution in the imagery was perhaps the more abstract twist in the plot that brought this film to a close. This film is a wonder of meliesian-style film with the (sometimes literally) dizzying abstractness of the sets and paranormal subject matter taking it far out of the realm of lumierian realism. The painting of the sets (be it spirals or jagged patterns drawn into the wall) or the content (like the cartoonishly small residence of dr caligari) only amplify the oddity of the plot, revolving around the eery and mysterious "somnambulist."
The first scene in this movie actually spoke to me as being quite illustrative of the Italian state of being in the period this film was created. Much like most of the film it reiterated the notion of fiscal depression with the gaggle of unemployed men huddled in wait for jobs; that and the bleak, dusty, barren landscape presented by the apartments and surrounding area were a great visual indicator of the aforementioned depression.
