The movie begins and ends with the knocking of a door. One is the offering of help, and the other is begging for mercy. They grieve and the wounds are fresh, although many had been buried. What an incredible feat to escape purgatory. The soul you have before life is guided by a bubbly, PR-centric, quota-meeting managerial class. The meaning of life is a tiny leaf. Trent Reznor plays jazz. David Foster Wallace needles his way in there. The man really tells it to his mother. What if there was a version of the movie where you see him fall down the manhole, and you see everything. And it’s in slow motion. And “Hurt” by NIN (thanks again Trent) plays while it happens. Would be a very different kind of movie. Probably the most controversial one of the year.
