A Real Pain 2024
A Real Pain is impressively spacious for a neat runtime of 90 minutes. While an unsubtle script, its charm and sincerity more than make up for it (at least for a sentimental sap like me.) The story, as its title might suggest, touches on pain in various forms and our personal and collective sensitivity towards those varieties of pain. Longlegs is for sure a victim of its own hype, and I feel like it poses itself as far denser than it is via marketing and framing. There's a tonal issue here in that it starts off fairly grounded with a touch of the supernatural but devolves into something goofy that's comparable to Blumhouse-style popcorn horror while still trying to maintain its "serious" edge.
