One of my favourite mangas growing up, the film tries to fit a lot into its short runtime. The main beats are there but the heart is not, unfortunately. Everything is rushed and the main actress ends up having to spend the whole film pouting about something, which got tiring quickly.

Mom, Is That You?! 2023
Usually this is the kind of film I really enjoy. Unfortunately though it fell flat for me, with an unlikable main character and stilted dialogue that sucked away any charm the film was intending.
Any character development felt shoehorned in and not really like growth at all. The lead actor is constantly complaining about his lot in life and how his family wouldn’t be able to understand his big important work problems, which I thought was setting him up to realise…

Touch 2024
An absolutely beautiful, gentle piece of cinema. It touched my soul in so many ways.
I enjoyed how the concept of physical interaction and its weight was woven into the narrative, and intertwined with the early pandemic setting for the modern parts of the film. It perfectly captured so much about the frustration and fear of that time without it being a focal point.
As a Japanese learner myself, I also appreciated the main character’s engagement with Japan in a way that felt authentic and relatable, which can be so hard to get right.

Time of EVE: The Movie 2010
I really enjoyed the concept of this film. The premise was intriguing, and there was a lot of creative decision making with the “camera work” at a time when that wasn’t really being widely explored in most anime. Unfortunately the execution failed at times both in terms of the storytelling and the production quality, and it would have been nice to get a bit more closure, but I appreciated what it was trying to do.
