Wes Anderson cinema is simple: his character aren't overtly complicated and the plots are quite linear. His main selling point is the aesthetic he developed and perfected through many movies (and a star-studded cast). Grand Budapest Hotel is the ultimate fulfilment of its cinema: the actors, the diorama-like sets, the aesthetic, the plot all work together to create a perfectly balanced movie. Every single part enhances the other and creates a movie that feels like a warm hug with a hint of sadness. Shoutout to Ralph Fiennes performance, one of his best if not the best.

Edgar Wright's movies from the Cornetto trilogy are some of the finest examples of spoof movies, so much that this kind of definition seems a little bit too limiting and fails to describe their merits. My favorite Studio Ghibli movie. Every single aspect of it resonates with me: the anti-fascist message, the sublime Joe Hisaishi soundtrack, the depiction and the clear skies of a fictional pre-war Italy, the flight segments and the protagonist who is an avatar of Miyazaki's own indolence, sense of duty and world wievs. Everything is wrapped in a movie that doesn't take itself too seriously but at the same time doesn't downplay the importance of the serious matters that provide great depth to it and an interesting background to the action. It's the most nostalgia inducing movie that the demon called Hayao Miyazaki could cook.
