I was really into it during the first half – it felt like a solid character study, and I liked the evolving dynamic between Laszlo and Van Buren. But as the film leans into its filmmaking allegory, it becomes less invested in its characters and more in its own self-importance, coming across as heavy-handed and a bit too predictable even when it tries to provoke. The technical artistry is undeniable, but I guess it’s just a matter of taste. To…

I'm Not There does a much better job of capturing Bob Dylan as an artist, and Inside Llewyn Davis tells a more compelling story—the tale of a struggling folk singer who, rather than finding success, never makes it. But as far as straightforward rose-tinted biopics go (which, admittedly, aren’t my thing), tropes and all, this might as well be as good as it gets. There’s a ton of great music, and the performances keep it engaging, even when it follows a familiar schlocky formula. It doesn’t do anything particularly interesting, but it has just enough style, energy and heart to get by.

Millions of galaxies of hundreds of millions of stars, in a speck on one in a blink. That's us, lost in space. The cop, you, me... Who notices?

Honestly, I have no idea how to review or rate this. I'm a big fan of the first two films in the franchise, and this basically feels like a director doing his best, within the parameters set by the studio, to offer his take on the greatest hits of those (not unlike his 2013 Evil Dead remake). It looks good; there are some good set pieces (along with some cringe-worthy fan service moments). Cailee Spaeny is doing her best and…
