Hilarious comedy with screwball roots starring Tomlin as a bratty millionaire whose soul enters the body of the lawyer assigned to her estate. The latter is played by Steve Martin and this film basically made me a lifelong fan of his work.

The premise is indeed very silly, and gives Martin a chance to show off his physical comedy, never better here as he adopts Tomlin’s highly feminine characteristics on one side of his body. I always love the moment…

Dean Norris goes full Foghorn Leghorn in this one.

Agreed with many commenters here that Kerry Washington is the best thing in this film, and that someone other than Tyler Perry should have directed this otherwise compelling piece of WWII history.

Disappointing misfire here from Barry Levinson. I know he’s retired now, but Pesci would have provided the precise psychotic edge needed to play Vito Genovese. Instead, we have de Niro playing both Genovese and Frank Costello in some of the worst hair and makeup I have seen in a movie for quite some time.

I suspect a good 30 minutes were cut out of this film. That would certainly explain the sloppy first half which, tonally speaking, is all over…

Man, do I regret not getting around to this one until
now, partly due to the fact that I saw the remake with DeNiro and Lange in the early 90s and  thought that one was just okay. But I understand completely why this is considered an essential noir. Widmark is fantastic as forever scheming Harry Fabian, trying to make a name for himself as a wrestling promoter in post WWII London.

Probably my favorite thing about this one is Charles…
