There were some decent moments but this movie really bogged itself down in trying to connect to the original. If there was zero connection to the first movie aside from it being set in Rome and starring Gladiators I, and probably most audiences, wouldn’t have batted an eye. Instead they spent too much time revering Russell Crowes’ Maximus, and not enough time in the Coliseum.

Evil Dead Rise 2023
Evil Dead Rise keeps it fresh with a new setting, but ultimately falls short by relying on the Evil Dead iconography(chainsaw, shotgun, POV demon cam), and stylish but soulless direction.
Rise does get the Deadites right. They are absolutely terrifying, while at the same time delivering, darkly comic one liners.
