  devastating look into how the carceral state is fueled by greed and cruelty rather than rehabilitation and empathy and the very real very wounding impact this structural framing can have on a family, both on a zoomed in day to day level and multi-generationally

  handled with care throughout but i feel like all the heed in the world still wouldn’t keep me from feeling like an intruder on a father and daughter’s potentially most formative moments — haunting to wonder if some conversations or interactions would have played out differently without cameras around

  still, in equal measure heartbreaking and infuriating

  * sofi and i choosing to watch this at amc empire 25 after boldly proclaiming we haven’t cried in ages and are in need of catharsis

  ** us blubbering buckets of tears and then having to walk out of the theater straight into times square in broad daylight with puffy eyes and a shattered sense of self as mobs of tourists try to mow us down
