  She Came to Me 2023

  This is the AppleTV blurb that led me to watch this for Rom-a-thon 2025:

  A composer with an unfinished opera, a spiritually conflicted psychiatrist, a free-spirited tugboat captain collide on an unpredictable voyage into uncharted waters 

  Sounds so insane that it’s impossible not to be hilarious. Unfortunately it’s played so straight that it just ends up mostly feeling very sad. It literally calls itself a romantic comedy, but it was too sincere to be funny even though the premise the characters were living through was theoretically hilarious. 

  Anyway, this effectively killed Rom-a-thon for me this year.

  My friend suggested this to me using phrases like “the most batshit movie” and it’s “fuckingly wildly fucked” and “It’s just wildly fucked up and makes no sense and makes me feel like I’m in a goddamn fever dream.”

  And here’s the thing. There is plenty bad to say about this but also, it’s way ahead of its time, weirdly woke, almost all of the ways it’s problematic are countered with it being pointed out it’s problematic.

  First and foremost I would like to say that Florence Pugh is absolutely amazing. She is so guttural and fragile and Jesus it’s the performance of a lifetime. 

  I walked away from this completely mesmerized by how delightful it was. 

  Delightfully bright and idyllic. 
  Delightfully shocking and grotesque.

  But the more minutes I put between it’s viewing and now the more fantastic it is. It completely subverted my expectations. It was surprisingly funny. The soundscape is transformative. I’m sure in 10 minutes I’ll remember 10 more perfect things about it.

  Fuck, kill me now. This is it.
