I love dance; I hate horror and gore. Editing cuts of both into one scene is diabolical.

The Red Shoes 1948
A great warning of what happens if you give too much of yourself to your work. First time I watched this, I was glued to the screen. I identified with Victoria’s character almost instantly. Her passion for her craft, and the exploitation of it by the men around her.
The story-within-a-story plot is such a lovely, poetic way to tell this tale. The acting, costumes, mesmerizing dance sequences, lighting, makeup, all in TechnicolorTM. It’s a perfect movie. I treated myself to seeing it on the big screen recently, and I highly recommend it if you have the chance.

Kwaidan 1964
I watch Kwaidan every fall. Each time, I’m shocked by the enormous sets and water-colored backdrops. The slow pacing with unnerving music, and the intensity of the characters. It’s all precise in a beautiful way. The protagonists are placed under high stakes, expected to learn valuable lessons, or else. This is an optimal method to show folk tales and campfire stories.
