  I can't believe I went so long without seeing this particular Zatoichi film (this is the Zatoichi that spawned all of the others).

  Tip: There seems to be massive confusion surrounding the order of the early Zatoichi films on IMDB, and as a result the synopses are often wrong. HuluPlus has all of them, and Criterion has done us the wonderful favor of numbering them on the cover. If you're interested in seeing them in order, go that route.

  This movie was pitched to me by a friend who described it as an "Iranian neo-noir vampire western." To me, something with that many labels sounds like a gimmick, a flagrant attempt to hook in multiple types of genre fans by promising them all a little something (but ultimately not giving them enough of anything they want).
