  After reviewing this movie’s history, I learned it is based on Sarah Waters’s book Fingersmith, which has been on my reading list for a while. I love Sarah Waters; she has significantly impacted the lesbian literature scene and should be commended for her work, so I was surprised to learn that this movie is based on that story.   This art nouveau-esq film was a very unexpected top movie on this list. I had been told that this is a classic and one of this director’s most significant works, and they were most definitely right. The character progression of Petra, the symbolism of her changing hair, and the way she treats other characters are so entertaining to watch wither away as she descends into madness after one love affair.
