Taken me wayyy too long to get around to watching this but Some Like It Hot deserves everything bit of acclaim it has. Rarely do you see a comedy from the 1950s and it feel quite so modern but that could go for any number of Billy Wilder's films. There's an effortless quality, stemming from a tight as fuck screenplay and simple but effective direction. Topping it off with three of the best comedy performances in cinema, combining Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe. Some Like It Hot has stood the test of time till now and will do so for years to come.

Double Indemnity doesn't really ever put a foot wrong. It's a perfectly constructed thriller, timeless, effortless cool and endlessly compelling. Another example for brilliant studio system filmmaking, while signalling a move into a call darker, morally ambiguous American cinema.

The cold and calculated visual style and scarce but piecing score occasionally work really well but for the most part it just fails to grab you on the level that is required to really engage with the film. It's definitely a concept that could work well but here the style feels unmotivated, the way the story is told is uninteresting and the writing feels…
