Mitchell Benefiel Pro

I’m a little overly generous with my ratings so if it’s below 3 stars it’s pretty damn bad

Film 7/26 of my ABC Film Challenge

This film came at the perfect time in my life. I’ve never resonated more with a character. Not because of his actions or his personality, but because of his surroundings and circumstances. I’m graduating college in a year and I know exactly what it feels like to be smothered by those around you just watching, waiting, and expecting you to do something great. Under all the pressure you just want to crack and go…

Film 3/26 of my ABC Film Challenge

Scorsese is a master at world building. Yes, this is a true story, and yes I know casinos are real, but I felt so immersed in this environment for 3 hours that I felt like I was somewhere else. This movie is incredibly tight with no filler and Marty brings the worst out in his characters at just the right times. The sad story of Sam Rothstein and his little slice of heaven that was the Tangier’s casino is one I will be revisiting multiple times.

This movie felt like a parody of itself. All the dudes in this are one dramatic bead of sweat away from making out with each other.

"I don't see a lot of money here."

Many films from biopics to narratives glorify the entertainment industry in such a way that is sometimes nauseating. The Coen Brothers set out here to create a raw, genuine depiction of a struggling small fry musician moving from couch to couch as he looks for his big break. The shots, lighting, and color palette all work together to form a bleak outlook as Llewyn is thrown from one disappointment to another with no respite. A film that will stay with me for a long time, and it's just as impactful on a rewatch.

This is the best shot film of the year. The transitions, angles, and feel of the camerawork is beautiful. As everyone else is saying, the first half is chaotic and intense but in a good way and then once the second act starts, things start to get messy. I’m fine with having different perspectives but wish they had been tied together more cleanly. Still, great performances and direction.
