Uplifting and honest. Unflinching and sad. But above all a testament to the incredible power of human determination.

Top Gun: Maverick 2022
Upon rewatch, the technical achievement of the flight scenes stand out. This is a masterfully-made film that pays tremendous homage to the original even as it plumbs deeper emotional depths.
There’s more to it, too. Some beautiful shots (the test flight, the sailing), moments of understated humor, and some real authentic performances (oh, Val).
I accept that there is no ridding us of Glen Powell at this point, but for the love of God can we be done with Jon Hamm now? Please?!?

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story 2016
I had intended to save a rewatch until after Andor is complete. However, circumstances put me in front of a TV showing it, so how could I do otherwise?
It’s a gritty, more “realistic” take on Star Wars, which is a welcome addition to the canon, while also featuring one of the greatest displays of Force-wielding power (and terror) ever seen.
It’s a violent, unforgiving WWII movie in space with one of the best, funniest droid sidekicks in the galaxy far, far away.
It’s imperfect, and it’s magnificent.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail 1975

And you know what, I’ll be damned if it doesn’t still hold up all these years later. Watched it again on New Year’s Eve and, even having seen…
