The film’s emotional core and the conflict it mines from its relationships through sci-fi concepts was easily the stand out aspect of this film. The pathos and world building are unfortunately bogged down by a plot where Bong Joon Ho’s genre-blending sways this way too far into over the top, wacky political satire. But the craft displayed is nonetheless inspiring and hugely influential in my own attempts in writing high concept yet grounded sci-fi.

I loved the first hour of this film. It moves at a breakneck pace, and it looks and sounds fantastic!
But the movie falls of the rails at the halfway point when you realize that the epic with 5 (maybe even 6) main leads thinks it only has time for 3. Where the hell did Sidney and Lady Fay go! They were the most interesting characters that get relegated to B plots with no resolution.

Arrival 2016
The past
We look back at everything that has come before us, unable to alter what has been set in stone. Our lives couldn’t have played out any other way. We’ve been led here.
The future
Though our futures are ours to mold, they will inevitably feel the same. Everything to come, laid out in front of us. Deja vu.
The present
There is solace in that we are always at the crossroads of what has been and what will be. A paradox between free will and fate; our stories simultaneously being told, experienced, and not yet written.Translated from by
