The Last Wave 1977
106 minutes of ominous weather, premonitory dreams and Richard Chamberlain’s beautiful face in 1970s Sydney. I’ve always felt a strange affinity with Weir’s films, with their subtle mysticism and his approach to mystery. Enigmatic and beautiful, this would make a great double bill with Skolimowski’s The Shout.

Eggers pays tribute to Albin Grau’s Prana Film with an occult-heavy reimagining of Stoker’s novel via Murnau and Herzog. Night Tide 1961
Like a beatnik RKO/Val Lewton production with two beautiful leads, a dreamy California setting, and a moody, abstract soundtrack. Most of the time what I want from a movie is that it feels like slipping into a deeply comforting opium dream, and Night Tide delivers. The title is taken from a line of Poe’s best poem.
My new headcanon is that this is the backstory of Billy from Easy Rider.
