There was a dream that was Gladiator 2, I just wish the filmmakers had tried harder to realize it.
I actually really enjoyed the third act of this one, the problem was that the first two acts didn’t earn any of the payoff.
I expected and had no problem in theory with this film rehashing the best beats of the first one on a larger scale, but it felt like the callbacks and reminders of the far superior original were…

When the heroes of the film are the scrappy stunt and production folks and the execs are made to look like unenlightened fools throughout, of course the real execs wouldn’t be in a rush to make this…
As a blonde guy who can’t do flips and has totally watched the Godfather, I felt personally attacked by this movie. I won’t let it push me around, well I will, well I will.
SPOILER: When I found out that the main theme of the movie wasn’t horses, I lost interest.

A surprisingly insightful meditation on cycles of addiction and how an addict will justify the means to their ultimate ends, knowing full well it will cost them and everyone around them everything. More “grounded” and character driven than I thought a GDT movie about the underbelly of 1940s carnival life would be. Not the movie I was expecting from the promotional materials but a really enjoyable and thought provoking film.
