Why was this so good? Why did I like it?
Without being a parent, I think this movie resonates with something that is universally felt. It also delivers a rather equitable message. While it focuses on the roles of mothers in American society it deals with the broader role of expectation, communication, and emotional needs.
Amy Adams delivered a performance that was very blunt when it needed to be, and nuanced at other times.

Taron Egerton is in this movie. It was perfectly average. My reaction was utterly neutral.
To be fair, I think this is the most exciting you can make the job of being a TSA agent. It says something about the lack of an emotional hook that the "big promotion" that Terry Eggtown asks for is being on the xray machine. Like the audience cares.
I don't know what the movie is missing other than more things for Tony Easton to do in the airport. Being chained to the xray machine got old very fast.

Never has vitamin deficiency and eating contaminated corn been so we'll committed to film. Seriously though, this has become one of my favorite movies. The commitment to the era is laudable and it's that gritty 1630s realism that sells the horror of religious persecution. But also the Peter is a devil and there is a coven of vvitches so maybe the dad was on to something.
Atmospheric in that Robert Eggers way. Great performances all around, but it began to slump a bit for me in the final act. Skårsgard's look was great, but I almost wish we saw less early and more later.
*spoilers* I liked it when Wilem Dafoe asked Count Orlok incredulously: "But you like me lobster, don't ya?"
