Who would be desperate enough to sponsor a loser like Rod Kimble? Chris Parnell’s AM radio impresario, that’s who. Apart from Kimble tumbling down and down a mountain at a length that can only be described as Tarkovskyian, there’s no finer joke in this picture than Parnell’s tattoo and the forensic level of detail in which he describes it. Parnell has one bit, basically; he always plays a version of Ward Cleaver who’s just managing to keep a lid on his mania. But by god does he make the most of it here.

1. Eddie Murphy’s performance: grating, graceless, witless.
2. In the second act, soppy self-pity drowns the movie's appealingly puckish premise. In a triumph of cringe, this mopey sequence is set to the plaintive strains of "Hallelujah." Truly weapons-grade pretentiousness.
3. Shrek is a distractingly ugly movie. Much of that ugliness is explained by technology: what was state of the art for CG animation in 2001 is, today, mechanistic and obviously staged. But some of the ugliness stems from the character…
