  Revisiting this as an adult made me appreciate the spectrum that this movie had to offer: horror balanced by humor, committed and memorable characters that didn’t take themselves too seriously, toxic masculinity and queerness, and that super oily sax man.

  80s films had a style that just can’t be duped and I long for it when it comes to good old fashioned fun.

  The Substance 2024

  I have lived much of my life feeling so imprisoned by beauty standards that I have tortured my body to the point of wanting to kill it - so “Substance” was a horrible ride where I relived my 20s. This movie reminds me it’s a shared experience, and perfectly captures the quiet rage women feel living in a culture largely defined by the male gaze. It parodies it, twists it, and finally lets it explode in an over-the-top, gross-out, body horror spectacle that somehow also feels strangely relatable.
